Minor earthquake hits eastern Japan

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan Friday, but there was no danger of tidal waves, the meteorological agency said.

The quake occurred at 12:32 pm (0332 GMT), with its focus located off the Pacific coast of Miyagi prefecture, some 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of Tokyo and 80 kilometres below sea-level, the agency said.

There were no reports of casualties or property damage from the quake.
