New earth tremor in Algeria at site of killer quake
ALGIERS (AFP) Oct 12, 2003
An earth tremor measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook northern Algeria on Sunday in the same area where a killer earthquake claimed nearly 2,300 lives in May, the Algerian geophysical research center said.

The epicenter of Sunday's quake was near the city of Boumerdes and could be felt in the capital Algiers, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) to the west.

An earthquake on May 21 measuring 6.8 on the open-ended Richter scale devastated Boumerdes and many other villages and towns in the region as hundreds of poorly constructed buildings collapsed.

The seismically active zone has been rattled regularly since then.
