Gibraltar fines Greenpeace activists
GIBRALTAR (AFP) Oct 22, 2003
A Gibraltar court on Wednesday found four environmental activists and a journalist guilty of charges relating to the boarding by Greenpeace in January of a single-hull tanker in Gibraltar waters.

Video evidence, showing the incident at sea, was shown in the court room prior to guilty verdicts being handed down to Argentine Waldemar Wichmann and Briton Richard Pearson, both men charged with obstructing police and importing a semi-rigid inflatable boat, a prohibited import in the British territory.

The pair were each finded 1,000 pounds (1,700 dollars).

Luis Ferreirim of Portugal and Spaniard Mateo Perez Garcia were each charged with boarding the tanker Vemamagna and obstructing police. They were fined 250 pounds each.

Spanish journalist Jose Marin of Telecinco television, accused of resisting arrest, was fined 500 pounds.

A Spanish cameraman from Antena 3 television, Virgilio Moreno, had his case dismissed earlier in the month-long proceedings.

Two Greenpeace fast launches sailed into Gibraltar bay on January 20, with Spanish journalists accompanying the activists, and met a strong police presence at sea.

Police initially arrested 12 journalists and eight activists but most were later freed.

Two activists from the Greenpeace vessel Esperanza climbed aboard the Vemamagna and displayed banners in English and Spanish reading "oil hazard" to highlight the presence of the single-hull tanker, which was permanently at anchor and supplied bunkers to other ships.
