Strong quake jolts southwestern Japan

A relatively strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck southwestern Japan Tuesday, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at 2:50 pm (0550 GMT), with its focus 40 kilometersmiles) below sea-level just off the Pacific coast of Mie Prefecture, roughly 350 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of Tokyo, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
