Honduran indigenous group blocks roads to stem deforestation
TEGUCIGALPA (AFP) May 11, 2004
Hundreds of indigenous people blocked Honduras's main road Tuesday to protest the deforestation of their communities, organizers said.

The demonstrators from western Honduras, members of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (Copinh), blocked the road linking Tegucigalpa with San Pedro Sula, creating major traffic jams in both directions, local radio stations reported.

"We feel bad taking actions like these, which affect ordinary people who use this road, but we are doing it to protect our trees," Copinh leader Salvador Zuniga told local radio networks.
