More than 130 dead in Haiti floods: new toll
PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) May 25, 2004
About 130 people have been killed in floods after days of torrential rain in Haiti, according to a new toll given Tuesday by the civil protection agency.

Haitian officials had previously reported 58 dead in the country, while at least 80 people were killed by floods in the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Fifty-eight people were swept away by a river that burst its banks in the farming district of Fonds Verette, northeast of the capital, emergency services said.

Fonds Verette was also badly hit by tropical storms in 1994 and 1998, when dozens were killed.

The civil protection agency also said that the southeastern districts on the frontier with the Dominican Republic had also been badly hit by the storms. About 30 were reported dead in the Mapou Belle Anse zone, where the Grand Gosier River caused widespread damage, as well as another 13 in Thiotte.
