Southwest Dominican Republic a disaster area after flooding; scores dead, missing
SANTO DOMINGO (AFP) May 25, 2004
The Dominican town of Jimani was a disaster area Tuesday, after flooding killed at least 76 people there and left more than 100 missing, authorities said, adding that another seven were killed elsewhere in the Caribbean nation.

Witnesses and journalists in Jimani said devastation was widespread there. The Soleil River, which runs across the border from Haiti, burst its banks Monday after seven days of heavy rain, sweeping away men, women and children in the Independencia province town.

National Emergency Committee chief Radhames Lora Salcedo said that for sanitary reasons the dead would have to be interred in mass graves.
