Lightning kills 16 in Romania in two months

Sixteen people were struck dead by lightning and 14 others drowned in storms which hit Romania in July and August, authorities said Wednesday.

The latest casualties included two people killed by lightning in Prahova, in the centre of the country, on Tuesday.

A man was swept away by floodwaters on Wednesday while fishing in the river Siret in the north-eastern region of Bacau.

On Saturday, a total of four children and two adults drowned when storms swept Bacau and the Black Sea region of Constanta, in southeastern Romania.

Hundreds of houses were flooded and thousands of hectares (acres) of vineyards and cereal plantations were destroyed.

In the northern region of Suceava, about 30 houses were destroyed during the night, according to the top local government official, Ioan Cusnir.
