Taiwan hit by quake measuring 7.0 on Richter scale

An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan Friday, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The quake struck at 12:08 pm (04:08 GMT), with an epicenter 109 kilometres (68 miles) northeast of Suao along the northeastern coast. Its focus was 58 kilometers below sea level.

It was measured at 5.0 on the Richter scale in eastern Ilan and Hualien counties and 4.0 in the capital Taipei.

No immediate damage was reported.
