Three dead, hundreds evacuated as new mudslide hits Guatemala
GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) Oct 11, 2005
At least three people died and some 300 persons were evacuated Tuesday as a fresh mudslide hit storm-weary western Guatemala, an official said.

The death toll from devastating mudslides and accompanying heavy rains in this central American country topped 2,000 Tuesday. The mudslides have been triggered by torrential rains unleashed by Tropical Storm Stan.

The latest mudslide hit the indigenous community of San Pedro Sacatepequez, 250 kilometers (155 miles) west of the capital, according to Jorge Hernandez, an official with the office of the national coordinator for combating disasters.

Emergency workers are checking the area for other possible victims, Hernandez said.
