Strong earthquake hits off Tonga

A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.1 struck Friday near the Pacific islands of Tonga, the US government said.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 0731 GMT, was located 363 kilometres (226 miles) west of the island nation's capital Nuku'alofa.

No reports of casualties or damage were immediately available.
