India-EU To Work Together On ITER

The European Union has indicated it will support India's bid to join the International Thermonuclear Reactor Experimental project.

The sixth summit meeting between the two sides Wednesday also resulted in the EU opening the doors for India's participation in Europe's own global navigation satellite system, Galileo.

"Chances of India joining International Thermonuclear Experimental Project brightened with European Union backing New Delhi's bid," said the Indian Express newspaper Thursday.

Benita Ferreo Waldner, the EU Commissioner for External Affairs, said these steps were being taken in recognition of India's proven scientific capabilities.

"We and the U.S. are unanimous that India joins ITER project. There are other countries in the project, but I am very positive about the results, " she said.

She said EU would work toward India's participation in the project. India's application to join ITER would be taken up Sept. 13. The United States and the EU are key members of the project, which will be located in France.

Other members are Russia, China, Japan and South Korea.
