Beijing (AFP) Aug 13, 2008 Landslides and flash floods have killed at least 40 people in southwest China, and 16,000 have been forced to evacuate their homes, state media reported Wednesday. In addition to those killed in Yunnan province between Thursday and Monday, at least six people were missing, Xinhua news agency said. Tropical storm Kammuri has affected 1.25 million people in Yunnan, according to civil affairs officials' estimates, Xinhua reported. Kammuri, the third tropical storm to hit China this year, landed in the southern province of Guangdong on August 6, before sweeping westward to Yunnan. About 3,300 homes were destroyed in Yunnan and 18,000 were damaged, with officials estimating economic losses at 549 million yuan (80 million dollars), mostly from damaged crops.
