Banned Chinese GM Rice Protein Found In Dutch Shipment To Cyprus
The Hague (AFP) June 20, 2007 The Dutch food safety authorities reported Wednesday that a banned genetically modified rice protein was found in a shipment sent to Cyprus in March. The so-called BT63 rice is genetically modified to be resistant to certain bacteria but there are concerns about for the safety of the rice for human and animal consumption, the Dutch authorities said. In March Cyprus reported that it had found DNA from this type of GM rice in a 100-tonne shipment of rice protein concentrate. The shipment was since sent back to the Netherlands and will be either sent back to China or to another country which accepts to receive it. Environmental watchdog Greenpeace said the find "shows that it is important to have stricter checks on the European Union's border" to keep out banned genetically modified products. "This is an experimental rice type that is not allowed anywhere in the world. The Chinese environmental security authorities have been discussing whether or not to authorize it for commercial use because of doubts about its safety," Greenpeace GM campaigner Arnaud Apoteker told AFP.
