China's top lawmakers to review food safety law: state media Beijing (AFP) Aug 18, 2008 China's top legislature, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, will debate a proposed food safety law next week, state media reported, after a series of industry scandals. The five-day session, which begins Monday, will review a raft of proposed legislation, including laws on patents, recycling and insurance, Xinhua news agency reported. However, the law on food safety is expected to be the most closely watched. Beijing has been trying to improve the reputation of sectors such as the food and drug industries after scandals surrounding exports of a range of goods, from toxic seafood to fake medicine, made domestic and international headlines. Wu Jianping, a senior official in charge of China's food quality control, jumped to his death from a building in Beijing this month after anti-graft investigators started looking into his affairs, state media said. The former head of the State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, was executed last year after being convicted of taking bribes in return for approving hundreds of medicine products, some that later proved dangerous.
