Death toll rises to 28 in Philippines floods, landslides
Butuan, Philippines (AFP) Jan 18, 2009 The death toll from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the Philippines has risen to 28, the government said Sunday. Another 13 people are still missing, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said, with most of the casualties occurring on the southern island of Mindanao. Hundreds of families living near rivers and on slopes have been forced to flee their homes after days of heavy rain, local officials in the south also said. The United Nations on Friday pledged to help 25,000 families affected by the flooding on Mindanao through the World Food Programme, saying many of those in evacuation centres were now "highly vulnerable due to growing food insecurity."
