Gates Foundation sharpens focus on Europe
San Francisco (AFP) Aug 13, 2009 The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said Thursday it is making Europe a priority in its drive to promote using technology to cure health and poverty woes. Joe Cerrell was appointed to head a foundation office to be opened in London at the start of next year. Cerrell is the foundation's director of global health policy and advocacy. "Expanding our work in Europe is an important priority for the foundation, and we're very pleased that Joe will be leading this effort," said Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, co-chair of the foundation he started with his wife. "Joe has led highly successful global health advocacy activities, many of which were conducted with European partners." Cerrell will manage a portfolio of policy and advocacy grants and his team is to build on foundation partnerships with governments and organizations in Europe, according to Gates. The roster of foundation partners includes Groupe Agence Francaise de Developpement in France, the Department for International Development in Britain, and GTZ in Germany. "Our European partners are some of the most innovative and bold influencers working to alleviate extreme poverty and disease in the developing world," said foundation chief executive Jeff Raikes. The foundation's London office is to fund European groups researching advocacy projects, primarily related to global health and development. The Gates Foundation is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, not far from technology giant Microsoft and has offices in Washington DC, Beijing, and New Delhi. Share This Article With Planet Earth
