Over two million affected by Philippine floods: govt
Manila (AFP) Sept 30, 2009 The number of people impacted by the Philippines' worst flooding in decades has jumped to more than two million, the government said Wednesday. Of that total, 389,616 people are crammed into 561 evacuation camps around the capital Manila and its eastern regions. Another 346,581 people are staying with their relatives or friends, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said. The death toll has remained at 246, the council reported in its latest update, although officials have said this may still rise with 42 still officially missing. Tropical storm Ketsana dumped the heaviest rain in more than 40 years on Manila and its neighbouring areas on Saturday, submerging 80 percent of the nation's capital.
