Tropical Storm Patricia advanced toward Mexico's Baja California Peninsula with landfall possible late Tuesday or early Wednesday, weather forecasters said.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said a tropical storm warning was in effect along the southern area of Baja California from the town of Buena Vista to Agua Blanca, an area that includes the popular Cabo San Lucas tourist resort.

At 1200 GMT Tuesday, Patricia was moving northward at about nine kilometers (six miles) per hour with maximum sustained winds near 95 kilometers (60 miles) per hour.

Forecasters said Patricia was likely to strengthen slightly over the next 24 hours and that rainfall from the storm could total as much as three inches across southern portions of Baja California.

Schools and port facilities in the popular tourist destination of Los Cabos were closed Monday by order of state authorities, while two low-lying neighborhoods were to be evacuated on Tuesday.

Port facilities in three other coastal towns were also shuttered Monday, with more closings possible up and down Mexico's Pacific coast, officials said.

In September, Hurricane Jimena struck the peninsula, leaving one person dead, and causing widespread flooding and property damage.
