Vietnam's annual typhoon toll

Typhoons and tropical storms kill dozens of people each year in Vietnam. Here is a chronology of recent major disasters:

2009

- September 29: Typhoon Ketsana strikes south of Danang, killing at least 38 people and leaving 10 missing

2008

- September: Typhoon Hagupit kills at least 41 people in northern Vietnam

2007

- October: At least 58 die when Typhoon Lekima hits northern and central Vietnam

2006

- December: Tropical Storm Durian kills at least 70 in the country's south

- October: Typhoon Xangsane leaves more than 70 dead in central Vietnam

- May: Typhoon Chanchu kills 21 Vietnamese fishermen while 220 of their countrymen are missing and presumed dead in waters off Taiwan and China

2005

- September: In northern Vietnam, Typhoon Damrey kills 63 people

US scrambles response to Pacific tsunami

The United States scrambled Tuesday to respond to a tsunami that left at least 28 people dead in the Samoa islands, deploying two disaster relief teams to American Samoa.
