Eight more deaths in Poland from cold

Freezing temperatures gripping Poland have killed eight more people, bringing to 76 the number of victims of a cold spell that hit the country nine days ago, police said Saturday.

"Eight people died of the cold Friday. This brings the overall death toll this winter to 199," national police spokeswoman Grazyna Puchalska told AFP.

The death toll for this year is already higher than for the whole of last winter, when 190 people died of cold.

Temperatures plunged to minus 35 degrees Celsius (minus 31 Fahrenheit) in some parts of Poland during the last week. Saturday morning the mercury registered minus 13 C (9 F) in Warsaw.
