Bosnian power firm hands out energy-saving bulbs
SARAJEVO, Dec 12 (AFP) Dec 12, 2008
Bosnia's largest state power company announced Friday it would give out more than half a million energy-saving light bulbs to encourage customers to use them.

Elektroprivreda BiH was to launch the month-long campaign on Monday, it said in a statement, and customers will be presented with bulbs when they pay power bills at the company's counters.

"We are doing this to protect our customers' standard of living by helping them pay smaller power bills and in order to protect the environment," the company's executive sales manager Emir Aganovic said.

"Elektroprivreda will also find this useful because it will leave us with more electric power for export," he added.

Bosnia and Bulgaria are the only electricity exporters in southeastern Europe.

The company said that by using the donated bulbs, Bosnian households could save 90-gigawatt hours of power annually -- equivalent to the output of a small hydro-power plant.

According to some statistics, Bosnia could save around 102 million euros (135 million dollars) worth of power annually by replacing standard light bulbs with energy-saving ones.

Elektroprivreda BiH is the largest of three power companies operating in Bosnia.
