Greenpeace France quits X over climate 'scepticism'
Paris, Nov 22 (AFP) Nov 22, 2024
The French branch of Greenpeace said Friday it had quit Elon Musk-owned X as it "favours disinformation and climate-scepticism".

It follows similar moves by news outlets in recent days, including Britain's The Guardian which branded X a "toxic media platform" and accused Musk of using its"influence to shape political discourse."

Greenpeace France said: "X today reaches an unprecedented level of toxicity: absence of moderation, proliferation of hate- and climate-sceptic speech and algorithmic pushing of extremist content".

Jean-Francois Julliard, director general of Greenpeace France, said the organisation "cannot feed a platform which favours disinformation (and) climate-scepticism".

Greenpeace France said it would remain active on other platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads, while exploring alternatives such as Bluesky.

Since its acquisition in 2022 by Musk, X has been accused of spreading false information and insufficient moderation.

US President-elect Donald Trump has named Musk, who rejects censorship in the name of free speech, to head a ministry of government efficiency.
