Teletouch GPS Tracking System Assists In Breakup Of California Theft Ring
Teletouch Communications announced Wednesday that Megatrux Transportation recently used their Teletouch VisionTrax and GeoFleet GPS vehicle fleet management system to track and recover a stolen tractor-trailer unit and its cargo. The recovery led police to a warehouse containing numerous stolen goods and the arrests of several members of a cargo theft ring operating out of Pico Rivera, California. "Megatrux invested in the GeoFleet and VisionTrax GPS-satellite tracking system to improve management of our trucking assets," stated Karen C. Pelle, president of Megatrux Transportation, based in City of Industry, CA. "We were very pleased that we were also able to use the system to recover our stolen truck, trailer and all of its contents. This system has become an integral and valuable part of our customer service and dispatch operations." Using the GeoFleet system, Megatrux monitors the location of its truck fleet multiple times daily through GPS location reports transmitted to Low Earth Orbit or "LEO" satellites reporting back to Megatrux Transportation personnel. At 7:00AM on March 26, 2005, a Megatrux driver called the company's dispatch office to report that his loaded truck and trailer had been stolen in Ontario, CA. Megatrux used the location data generated by the GeoFleet system to report the theft to local police. Megatrux then broadcast the stolen trailer information on its proprietary fax and email network to all of its drivers, in California and nationwide. Later, using updated GeoFleet data, Megatrux pinpointed the stolen vehicle location in Pico Rivera, CA, and Los Angeles County authorities converged on the warehouse to discover it full of stolen goods. As a result of this recovery, a large cargo theft ring was uncovered and a number of arrests were made. Teletouch CEO, T. A. "Kip" Hyde, Jr., added, "The GeoFleet suite of hardware and software products allow transportation companies of any size to cost effectively manage their mobile and fleet assets. "In this case, we were delighted to learn that Megatrux was able to not only recover their tractor-trailer and cargo, but that authorities were able to find and stop a major criminal enterprise. "This is an outstanding example of how GPS location-based technologies can help manage and protect vehicles, property and field personnel."
