US press cool over Obama-backed climate deal
Washington (AFP) Dec 20, 2009

In Macau, gambling's the only game in town
Macau (AFP) Dec 20, 2009
Cigarette smoke drifts upward as chain-smoking gamblers at the Casino Lisboa yell excitedly in Cantonese. Staff scurry back and forth with trays of milk tea while prostitutes circle an outer lobby in search of customers. It is a no-frills operation at the Lisboa, one of Macau's best-known casinos, and the tired decor seems to have changed little since it was showcased in the 1974 James Bond ... more

Manila (AFP) Dec 20, 2009
The alert level around Mayon volcano in the Philippines was raised from level three to level four on Sunday, meaning an explosive eruption could take place in days, government volcanologists said. Global warming hike may be steeper: research
Paris (AFP) Dec 20, 2009
Global temperatures could rise substantially more because of increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than previously thought, according to a new study by US and Chinese scientists released Sunday. The researchers used a long-term model for assessing climate change, confirming a similar British study released this month that said calculations for man-made global warming may be ... more

Blantyre (AFP) Dec 20, 2009
Three people were killed and about 300 injured Sunday when an earthquake measuring at least 6.0 on the Richter Scale struck northern Malawi, the second in under two weeks, authorities said. "This morning's tremor was a 6.2 size magnitude," said Malawi's chief geologist Leonard Kalindekase, adding it was the "largest so far" since the tremors began two weeks ago. The US Geological Survey ... more

Yellowstone's Plumbing Exposed
Salt Lake City UT (SPX) Dec 21, 2009
The most detailed seismic images yet published of the plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano shows a plume of hot and molten rock rising at an angle from the northwest at a depth of at least 410 miles, contradicting claims that there is no deep plume, only shallow hot rock moving like slowly boiling soup. A related University of Utah study used gravity measurements to indicate ... more

World must prepare for mass climate migration: IOM
Geneva (AFP) Dec 18, 2009
The International Organisation for Migration warned on Friday the world must prepare for a mass increase in climate-linked migration as leaders battled to save a deal on global warming in Copenhagen.
