Himalayan Glaciers Will Take Centuries To Melt Not Decades
London UK (PTI) Jan 18, 2010
A warning that most of the Himalayan glaciers will melt by 2035 owing to climate change is likely to be retracted after the United Nations body that issued it admitted to a series of scientific blunders. Two years ago, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) headed by India's Rajendra Pachauri, issued a benchmark report that claimed to have incorporated the latest and most detailed research into the impact of global warming. Tough Haitians still clinging to life under rubble
Port-Au-Prince (AFP) Jan 18, 2010
More than five days after an avalanche of rubble plunged her into a painful and solitary black hell and 12 hours after international teams heard her determined cries, Marie-France was rescued. French and US firefighters and medics drilled away the concrete slabs that buried her then ground their way through the steel door that protected but also imprisoned her when Port au Prince was hit by ... more

No skiing at Scottish resort -- too much snow
London (AFP) Jan 15, 2010
Skiers found the slopes at a Scottish resort closed on Friday, not because the snow was sparse, but rather there was too much of it, the resort's managers said. Cairngorm Mountain in northeast Scotland more often deals with a lack of snow but this year it is grappling with a different problem -- 185 centimetres (73 inches) of snow since Christmas in the worst bout of winter weather since the ... more

Flooding rains bring rare waterfalls to Australia's Uluru
Sydney (AFP) Jan 16, 2010
Heavy rains which flooded parts of Australia's vast desert centre have brought rare waterfalls spilling from the iconic monolith Uluru, or Ayers Rocks, officials said Saturday. The deluge, which swept across much of the continent's east after a tropical cyclone last month, prompted a wave of green in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to the giant red rock. "It's something that a ... more

Anger at US builds at Port-au-Prince airport
Port-Au-Prince (AFP) Jan 17, 2010
Anger built Sunday at Haiti's US-controlled main airport, where aid flights were still being turned away and poor coordination continued to hamper the relief effort four days on. "Let's take over the runway," shouted one voice. "We need to send a message to Obama," cried another, referring to US President Barack Obama. Control remained in the hands of US forces, who face criticism for th ... more

EU pushes for deeper carbon emissions cuts
Seville, Spain (AFP) Jan 16, 2010
The EU on Saturday stood by its offer to move to a 30 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 despite the failure of last month's UN climate summit to secure a legally-binding deal. European environment ministers taking part at an informal meeting in Seville said keeping the proposal on the table would inject momentum into the deflated international climate talks after the failure of ... more
