Mammoth iceberg could alter ocean circulation: study

An iceberg the size of Luxembourg knocked loose from the Antarctic continent earlier this month could disrupt the ocean currents driving weather patterns around the globe, researchers said Thursday. While the impact would not be felt for decades or longer, a slowdown in the production of colder, dense water could result in less temperate winters in the north Atlantic, they said. At least 11 people were injured and a lot of homes severely damaged by a 5.1-magnitude quake which hit southwest China Thursday, state media reported. The tremor hit at 12:56 pm (0456 GMT) and was centred about 90 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, at a relatively shallow depth of 16 kilometres, Xinhua news agency said, citing the China Earthquake Administration.
