Extreme winter spells disaster for Mongolia
Ulan Bator (AFP) Feb 25, 2010
Officials in Mongolia have declared more than half of the impoverished country a disaster area due to harsh winter weather, as the UN on Thursday launched a programme to help struggling nomads. About 2.5 million livestock had perished nationwide as of Monday, the government's State Emergency Commission reported this week, after weeks of persistent snow and temperatures below minus 50 Celsius ... more

China's 'Terminal' activist fights on after airport limbo
Shanghai (AFP) March 1, 2010
After three months in legal limbo in Japan, Chinese rights campaigner Feng Zhenghu says he is not wasting any more time. Feng was forced to camp out near an immigration counter at Tokyo's Narita airport after the Chinese government refused on several occasions to let him come home, in a case reminiscent of the Tom Hanks film "The Terminal". In the two weeks since his ordeal ended, he has ... more

China walks policy tight-rope ahead of congress
Beijing (AFP) Feb 28, 2010
The high command of China's communist leadership emerged enhanced from the global economic crisis, unencumbered by the political constraints in recession-plagued Western democracies. But while the Chinese model of top-down central planning can take credit for maintaining blistering rates of economic growth, analysts warn that leaders are walking a policy tight-rope as they head into the annual session of parliament.
