British ads banned over climate change claims
London (AFP) March 17, 2010
Britain's advertising watchdog has banned two government adverts for overstating the threat from climate change, it said on Wednesday. The adverts used nursery rhymes including "Jack and Jill" to highlight the impact of global warming, but the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said they exaggerated the risk. "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. There was none as extreme weather due to climate change had caused a drought," read the copyline on one of the ads. "Extreme ... read more

Indigenous Malaysians protest proposed land bill
Putrajaya, Malaysia (AFP) March 17, 2010
Some 500 indigenous Malaysians on Wednesday mounted an unprecedented protest over a government bill they say will deprive them of land. Activists for the Orang Asli, the term for the native tribes in peninsular Malaysia, say the legislation expected to be tabled this July will give them only 50,000 hectares (123,550 acres) of the 129,000 they claim. "Who are you to give the land when it ... more

Maldives president calls for reframing climate debate
Helsinki (AFP) March 17, 2010
The climate change debate should be reframed in economic and security terms ahead of a year-end UN summit in Mexico seeking a binding climate deal, the president of the Maldives said Wednesday. A price tag needs to be put on "the extent to which we destroy the atmosphere, the extent to which we pollute the atmosphere," President Mohamed Nasheed said at a climate change seminar in Helsinki. ... more

Habitat loss wipes out dragonfly, butterfly, beetle species
Doha (AFP) March 16, 2010
The destruction of natural habitats in Europe is wiping out butterfly, beetle and dragonfly species across the region, the updated European "Red List" of endangered species showed Tuesday. "When a Red List like this raises the alarm, the implications for our own future are clear. This is a worrying decline," said EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik. Scientists examining Europe's 4 ... more

Haiti reconstruction estimated at 11.5 billion dollars
Washington (AFP) March 16, 2010
Haiti needs 11.5 billion dollars over three years to rebuild after January's earthquake devastated one of the world's poorest countries, a World Bank and United Nations estimate found Tuesday. The sum is a tentative estimate of the cost to rebuild crushed infrastructure and relaunch economic activity, said Sergio Jellinek, World Bank spokesman for Latin America and the Caribbean. "This is a draft report. The recovery and reconstruction figure is still a work in progress," he told AFP, noting the ... read more
