Inquiry backs British scientists in global warming row
London (AFP) March 31, 2010
A British parliamentary inquiry into a scandal that engulfed one of the world's leading climate research centres Wednesday sided with the scientists accused over the controversy. Lawmakers found researchers at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), headed by Phil Jones, acted in line with normal practices when they refused data requests and did not seek to mislead. The House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee did, however, urge climate change scientists to rout ... read more

How Immune Cells 'Sniff Out' Bacteria
London, UK (SPX) Apr 01, 2010
Scientists are learning how our immune system senses and tracks down infection in the body by responding to chemical "scents" emitted by bacteria. Studying how immune cells manipulate their movement in response to external signals could shed light not only on how our immune system functions but also how cancer cells spread through the body and even how the brain wires itself. How Bats Avoid Collisions
Providence RI (SPX) Apr 01, 2010
For years, Brown University neuroscientist James Simmons has filmed bats as they flew in packs or individually chased prey in thick foliage. All the while, he asked himself why the bats never collided with objects in their paths or with each other. "You wonder, how do they do it?" he said. After a series of innovative experiments designed to mimic a thick forest, Simmons and colleagu ... more

Protests greet new round of Taiwan-China trade talks
Taoyuan, Taiwan (AFP) March 31, 2010
Taiwan and China held a new round of talks on a contentious trade pact Wednesday as protesters wary of the island's closer ties with the mainland scuffled with police and rival demonstrators. A group of about 100 anti-China demonstrators gathered as representatives of the two sides met in a hotel in Taoyuan near the island's capital, but were kept back by a cordon of uniformed police. Obama plan expands oil offshore oil drilling
Washington (AFP) March 31, 2010
President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a plan to expand oil drilling off US coasts, drawing protests from green groups but charges by Republicans it did not go far enough. The decision was a reversal of Obama's early 2008 campaign strategy, when he argued that lifting curbs on offshore drilling would take years to have an impact and would not provide enough sufficient extra supplies to be justified. The president's plan, part of a comprehensive energy strategy, would see new tracts of the ... read more
