Brazil moves slum residents after killer rains
Rio De Janeiro (AFP) April 11, 2010
Brazilian authorities evacuated thousands of shantytown residents Sunday so their houses could be demolished after heavy rains that killed 224 people last week threatened further landslides. Rio mayor Eduardo Paes said residents of the Morro de Urubu favelas (shantytowns) were being evacuated starting Saturday ahead of demolitions planned for Monday. Tehran (AFP) April 11, 2010
At least five million Tehran residents need to relocate elsewhere because Iran's capital sits on several fault lines and is threatened by earthquakes, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday. "We cannot order people to evacuate the city... but provisions have to be made. At least five million should leave Tehran so it is less crowded and more manageable in case of an incident," Mehr new ... more

Exports over ecology? Australia reef smash highlights risks
Sydney (AFP) April 11, 2010
A stricken Chinese ship that leaked oil onto the Great Barrier Reef is a loud wake-up call about the environmental risks of Australia's booming trade with its Asian neighbours, conservationists say. The coal vessel ran aground amid a massive increase in the number of multi-billion dollar coal and gas deals between Australian companies and Asian energy firms that are underpinning the country' ... more

A New Principle In Material Science Discovered
Providence RI (SPX) Apr 13, 2010
Materials scientists have known that a metal's strength (or weakness) is governed by dislocation interactions, a messy exchange of intersecting fault lines that move or ripple within metallic crystals. But what happens when metals are engineered at the nanoscale? Is there a way to make metals stronger and more ductile by manipulating their nanostructures? Brown University scientists may have figured out a way. In a paper published in Nature, Huajian Gao and researchers from the University of Alaba ... read more
