Vanuatu prepares to evacuate 3,000 from rumbling volcano
Sydney (AFP) April 19, 2010
The Pacific nation of Vanuatu has made plans to evacuate nearly 3,000 villagers after a highly active volcano started spewing ash clouds, an official said on Monday. The picturesque Gaua volcano, which has erupted 13 times since 1963 and has been exploding and rumbling for several months, is under close watch after a marked rise in activity in recent days. "It's increasing in activity," said Peter Korisa, planning officer at the National Disaster Management Office. "A few days back a lot of ash ... read more

Iceland volcano unlikely to slow global warming: scientists
Paris (AFP) April 16, 2010
Big volcanic eruptions have had a cooling effect on Earth's climate, but the Icelandic event is too small to provide any such respite from manmade global warming, scientists said on Friday. The benchmark cooling event of the past 20 years was in 1991, when Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines. It cooled Earth's surface by 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next ye ... more

China PM in unusual tribute to deposed leader
Beijing (AFP) April 16, 2010
China's Premier Wen Jiabao has written an unusual tribute to late reformist leader Hu Yaobang, whose death in 1989 triggered the Tiananmen democracy protests that were crushed by the army. The editorial, published in the People's Daily newspaper - the mouthpiece of the Communist Party - recounts in a surprisingly open and emotional manner a trip the two made to southwestern China 1986. ... more

China's exporters brace for stronger yuan
Beijing (AFP) April 14, 2010
Wang Shengpei runs a factory in southern China that churns out leather boots, high heels and trainers for consumers in the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. And he is worried. Wang is one of thousands of manufacturers across China bracing for a change in the nation's exchange rate policy, which he fears could squeeze his already razor-thin profit margins and make it harder to compete in overseas markets. "I hope it will not rise too fast if it has to appreciate," said Wang, chairman of D ... read more
