Riyadh (AFP) May 5, 2010
Two people died in the flooding caused by violent thunderstorms which paralysed Riyadh this week, Saudi newspapers reported on Wednesday. Beetle-infested forests pose water threat
Denver (UPI) May 5, 2010
U.S. forest managers say threats to watersheds from fire-prone dying forests are so severe they need help from local water utilities, ski resorts and others. The crisis, experts say, is a beetle epidemic that has killed more than 17 million acres of national forest, The Denver Post reported Wednesday. The Forest Service spends nearly $1 billion a year to clear and treat beetle-ra ... more

Blinking Neurons Give Thoughts Away
Bonn, Germany (SPX) May 06, 2010
Neurons communicate with one another via so-called action potentials. During an action potential, voltage-gated calcium channels are opened resulting in rapid calcium ion influx. Because of this tight coupling, fluorescent calcium indicator proteins can visualize action potentials. These proteins have two fluorescent subunits, one of which radiates yellow light and the other blue. When the ... more

Japan to restart controversial nuclear reactor after 14 years
Tokyo (AFP) May 6, 2010
Japan plans to restart Thursday its controversial fast-breeder nuclear reactor after operations were suspended for more than 14 years following a sodium leak and a fire. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is scheduled to relaunch Monju, the nation's only fast-breeder reactor, around 10:30 am (0130 GMT). The facility was shut down in 1995, less than two years after Monju had started generating power, after a special thermometer broke, leaking high-temperature metallic sodium that reacted violently wi ... read more
