UN fears 'irreversible' damage to natural environment Geneva (AFP) May 10, 2010 The UN warned on Monday that "massive" loss in life-sustaining natural environments was likely to deepen to the point of being irreversible after global targets to cut the decline by this year were missed. As a result of the degradation, the world is moving closer to several "tipping points" beyond which some ecosystems that play a part in natural processes such as climate or the food chain may be permanently damaged, a United Nations report said. More than two weeks after a BP-leased rig sank spectacularly 50 miles offshore and started hemorrhaging an estimated 200,000 gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico on April 22, vast swaths of the US coast remai ... more Neanderthal Genome Yields Reveals Extensive Interbreeding Santa Cruz CA (SPX) May 10, 2010 After extracting ancient DNA from the 40,000-year-old bones of Neanderthals, scientists have obtained a draft sequence of the Neanderthal genome, yielding important new insights into the evolution of modern humans. A four-story, 100-ton box was lowered Friday to the seabed to try to capture most of the oil and allow it to be funneled up to a ship on the surface, but it was rendered useless on Sunday when ice crystals formed in its domed roof. BP experts believe the smaller "top hat" containment box would not suffer the same proble ... read more |
