Greenpeace says bribery used in ICoast waste dump case
The Hague (AFP) May 18, 2010
Greenpeace accused Tuesday the Swiss-based multinational company Trafigura of bribing truck drivers into giving false testimonies, in the toxic waste dumping case in Ivory Coast in 2006. "Trafigura asked them to say that the waste was not dangerous, that it had not had any impact on their lives," a spokeswoman for the environmental organisation said. In August 2006, the Probo Koala ship, ... more

Pathogens Float On Tiny Clumps Of Aquatic Detritus
Washington DC (SPX) May 18, 2010
Researchers have found evidence that "marine snow"--aggregates of organic material floating in water bodies--may act as microscopic, island-like refuges for pathogens, or disease-causing organisms. This detritus may skew water sampling procedures and mathematical models used to predict the transmission of waterborne diseases to humans. The scientists responsible for these findings, funded ... more

Norwegian peat moss could be used to soak up Gulf oil: company
Oslo (AFP) May 18, 2010
A small Norwegian company said Tuesday it had developed a peat moss mixture that could protect parts of the US coast from giant plumes of oil gushing from the wreckage of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The company, Kallak Torvstroefabrikk, says one kilo (2.2 pounds) of its peat moss can absorb the equivalent of five times its weight in oil. "This makes it possible to protect fragile stretches of the coast: a beach, a swamp, a nesting ground for birds," said Rag ... read more
