Obama denies government botched oil spill response
Washington (AFP) May 27, 2010
President Barack Obama Thursday rejected charges he was slow to respond to the Gulf of Mexico "tragedy" and clamped down on the oil industry, as he tried to contain political blowback from the crisis. In a measured White House news conference, Obama admitted the federal government's response was not perfect, but dismissed a growing media narrative that he had been disengaged from the nightmare BP oil spill. Swiss defend swine flu vaccine purchase
Geneva (AFP) May 27, 2010
Swiss authorities on Thursday defended their decision to buy about twice as many doses of vaccines as its population at the beginning of the swine flu pandemic, much of which remained unused. "The purchase of the vaccines in the climate of uncertainty in the beginning of the A(H1N1) flu pandemic was justified, the same could be said for the doses of vaccines purchased," the Federal Interior ... more

Rats damage huge swathes of China's grasslands
Beijing (AFP) May 27, 2010
A plague of rats has gobbled up vast swathes of grasslands in north China, sparking a mass extermination drive amid concerns for herders, state media said Thursday. The proliferation has left holes across 65,000 kilometres (25,000 square miles) of Inner Mongolia, making it difficult for herders to ride their horses, whose hooves can get caught up, the official People's Daily newspaper said. ... more

Top kill stops leak, Obama targets offshore drilling
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 27, 2010
BP's risky bid to plug a Gulf of Mexico well appeared to be working Thursday, but new data showed it was already the worst oil spill in US history with a huge slick fouling the seas. US officials said that, for the first time since an April 20 explosion ripped through a BP-leased rig, the oil leak seemed to have stopped, but the glimmer of good news is too late to avert an environmental catastrophe. Even if the BP's "top kill" maneuver succeeds in capping the leak, millions of gallons of crude a ... read more
