Study: Aircraft can produce precipitation

A U.S. study has shown aircraft climbing or descending under certain conditions can cause snow or rain to develop and fall to the ground. Turboprop and jet aircraft inadvertently seed mid-level clouds, leaving behind odd-shaped holes or channels in the clouds, said Andrew Heymsfield of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which led the study. The scientists said the key ingredient for developing the holes in clouds is water droplets at subfreezing temperatures, below about 5 deg ... read more

President Barack Obama Monday implored Americans to visit southern tourist beaches and munched on local seafood, seeking to boost two key industries threatened by the BP oil disaster. "There's still a lot of opportunity for visitors to come down here. System at sea could form first Atlantic tropical storm

A low-pressure area forming over the Atlantic could become the first tropical storm of the season, the National Hurricane Center warned Monday. US donates tuberculosis facility to Nigeria

The United States on Monday donated a multi-million dollar facility for the detection and treatment of tuberculosis to Nigeria, where around 400,000 people suffer from the disease. BP shares plunged more than nine percent on Monday as investors fretted over the spiralling cost of the Gulf Mexico oil spill crisis and the future of the group's shareholder dividend.
