Putin says Arctic must remain 'zone of peace'
Moscow, Russia (AFP) Sept 23, 2010
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called Thursday for "a zone of peace" in the Arctic as Russia and its Polar neighbours scramble to stake their claims to the region's energy-rich seabed. "We think it is imperative to keep the Arctic as a zone of peace and cooperation," Putin told international participants at the first Arctic Forum in Moscow, which stressed the eye-watering potential for offshore development. "We all know that it is hard to live alone in the Arctic," Putin said, calling for foreign ... read more

Researchers Crack Cuckoo Egg Mystery
Sheffield, UK (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
Researchers at the University of Sheffield have discovered that cuckoo eggs are internally incubated by the female bird for up to 24 hours before birth, solving for the first time the mystery as to how a cuckoo chick is able to hatch in advance of a host's eggs and brutally evict them. Published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series B, the research shows that in ... more

Ocean Cooling Contributed To Mid-20th Century Global Warming Hiatus
Fort Collins CO (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
The hiatus of global warming in the Northern Hemisphere during the mid-20th century may have been due to an abrupt cooling event centered over the North Atlantic around 1970, rather than the cooling effects of tropospheric pollution, according to a new paper appearing in Nature. David W. J. Thompson, an atmospheric science professor at Colorado State University, is the lead author on the p ... more

Taking The Pulse Of Coral Reefs
Bristol, UK (SPX) Sep 23, 2010
Healthy reefs with more corals and fish generate predictably greater levels of noise, according to researchers working in Panama. This has important implications for understanding the behaviour of young fish, and provides an exciting new approach for monitoring environmental health by listening to reefs. Contrary to Jacques Cousteau's 'Silent World', coral reefs are surprisingly noisy plac ... more

Marine Scientists Unveil The Mystery Of Life On Undersea Mountains
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 23, 2010
They challenge the mountain ranges of the Alps, the Andes and the Himalayas in size yet surprisingly little is known about seamounts, the vast mountains hidden under the world's oceans. Now in a special issue of Marine Ecology scientists uncover the mystery of life on these submerged mountain ranges and reveal why these under studied ecosystems are under threat. The bathymetry of our oceans is now resolved at a scale and detail unimaginable by early pioneers and recent estimates suggest that, glob ... read more
