China says Nobel won't change nation's political system
Beijing (AFP) Oct 12, 2010
China said Tuesday that the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Liu Xiaobo would not influence the country's political system, as the United States urged Beijing to lift restrictions on the activist's wife. Fish Near Coal-Fired Power Plants Have Lower Levels Of Mercury
Raleigh NC (SPX) Oct 13, 2010
A new study from North Carolina State University finds that fish located near coal-fired power plants have lower levels of mercury than fish that live much further away. The surprising finding appears to be linked to high levels of another chemical, selenium, found near such facilities, which unfortunately poses problems of its own. "We found that fish in lakes located at least 30 kilomete ... more

Computer Switches Handle Heat That Renders Transistors Useless
Cleveland OH (SPX) Oct 13, 2010
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have taken the first step to building a computer capable of operating in the heat of a jet engine or the sunny side of the planet Mercury. Te-Hao Lee, Swarup Bhunia and Mehran Mehregany, have made electromechanical switches - building blocks of circuits - that can take twice the heat that renders electronic transistors useless. Their work was published in Science last month. The engineers took their cue from English inventor Charles Babbage, who ... read more
