13 dead as Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupts
Yogyakarta, Indonesia (AFP) Oct 27, 2010
Indonesia's Mount Merapi erupted three times on Tuesday, killing at least 13 people and causing thousands to flee as it emitted searing clouds and volcanic ash. Twelve bodies were found by rescuers at a house near the volcano and a baby died elsewhere, with predictions that the toll was likely to rise. Before the latest eruptions people living in the shadow of Indonesia's most active volcano had been warned to evacuate or risk being killed. "We heard three explosions around 6:00 pm (1100 GMT ... read more

100-Million-Year-Old Mistake Provides Snapshot Of Evolution
Leeds, UK (SPX) Oct 27, 2010
Research by University of Leeds plant scientists has uncovered a snapshot of evolution in progress, by tracing how a gene mutation over 100 million years ago led flowers to make male and female parts in different ways. The findings - published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Online Early Edition - provide a perfect example of how diversity stems from such gene ... more

Squid Studies Provide Valuable Insights Into Hearing Mechanisms
Falmouth MA (SPX) Oct 27, 2010
The ordinary squid, Loligo pealii - best known until now as a kind of floating buffet for just about any fish in the sea - may be on the verge of becoming a scientific superstar, providing clues about the origin and evolution of the sense of hearing. In a hangar-like research building at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), biologist T. Aran Mooney is exploring virtually unchar ... more

Climate Tipping Points For Populations, Not Just Species
Washington DC (SPX) Oct 27, 2010
As Earth's climate warms, species are expected to shift their geographical ranges away from the equator or to higher elevations. While scientists have documented such shifts for many plants and animals, the ranges of others seem stable. When species respond in different ways to the same amount of warming, it becomes more difficult for ecologists to predict future biological effects o ... more

Small Is Beautiful In Hydroelectric Power Plant Design
Munich, Germany (SPX) Oct 27, 2010
Hydroelectric power is the oldest and the "greenest" source of renewable energy. In Germany, the potential would appear to be completely exploited, while large-scale projects in developing countries are eliciting strong criticism due to their major impact on the environment. Researchers at Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have developed a small-scale hydroelectric power plant that solves a number of problems at the same time: The construction is so simple, and thereby cost-efficient, that th ... read more
