Taiji, Japan (AFP) Nov 2, 2010
Dolphin activist Ric O'Barry, the central figure in the Oscar-winning eco-documentary "The Cove", on Tuesday boycotted a meeting with Japan's dolphin-hunting town of Taiji, labelling it a "sham." O'Barry, a former dolphin trainer for 1960s TV show "Flipper" was due to discuss dolphin hunting in a highly anticipated meeting with Taiji Mayor Kazutaka Sangen, the local fisheries union and other environmental activists. Large-Scale Fish Farm Production Offsets Environmental Gains
Victoria, Canada (SPX) Nov 02, 2010
Industrial-scale aquaculture production magnifies environmental degradation, according to the first global assessment of the effects of marine finfish aquaculture (e.g. salmon, cod, turbot and grouper) released this week. This is true even when farming operations implement the best current marine fish farming practices. Dr. John Volpe and his team at the University of Victoria developed th ... more

Myanmar rulers 'not ready to return to barracks'
Bangkok (AFP) Nov 2, 2010
It's one of the world's oldest dictatorships, run by an enigmatic postman-turned-soldier who, true to form, is keeping the world guessing about whether his iron-fisted rule is drawing to an end. As Myanmar gears up for its first election in 20 years - a vote the generals say will mark the dawn of democracy after almost five decades of autocracy - junta chief Than Shwe's intentions remain shrouded in mystery. Speculation is rife that the ailing 77-year-old may step down from the position of com ... read more
