Sandstorms pose serious risk to human health

Paris (AFP) May 19, 2022
Sandstorms have engulfed the Middle East in recent days, in a phenomenon experts warn could proliferate because of climate change, putting human health at grave risk. At least 4,000 people went to hospital Monday for respiratory issues in Iraq where eight sandstorms have blanketed the country since mid-April. That was on top of the more than 5,000 treated in Iraqi hospitals for similar respiratory ailments earlier this month. The phenomenon has also smothered Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and t ... read more

For plasma with a hot core and cool edges, Super-H mode shows promise
Washington DC (SPX) May 18, 2022
Future fusion reactors have a conundrum: how to maintain a plasma core that is hotter than the surface of the sun without melting the device walls. Researchers call this challenge "core-edge integration." One method of cooling the plasma edge is to inject impurities such as nitrogen. The impurities absorb heat and release the energy as light that dissipates evenly across the walls. New res ... more

Why trees aren't a climate change cure-all
Salt Lake City UT (SPX) May 16, 2022
When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees, and for good reason.
