6.8-magnitude quake hits off Solomon Islands: USGS by Staff Writers Sydney (AFP) Nov 18, 2015 A 6.8-magnitude quake struck off the Solomon Islands late Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The tremor, with a depth of 10.82 kilometres (6.7 miles), struck 119 kilometres southwest of Dadali in the Pacific Solomon Islands at 2:31 am local time (18:31 GMT). The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no tsunami warnings were in effect. The Solomon Islands sit on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity due to collisions between continental plates. A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in September but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warnings were issued. In 2013, the Solomons were hit by a tsunami after an 8.0-magnitude quake, leaving at least 10 people dead and thousands homeless after buildings were destroyed.
