Areva Upgrades US Nuclear Power Plants With New Cutting Edge Technology
Bethesda MD (SPX) Jun 29, 2004 Areva's joint subsidiary with Siemens, Framatome ANP, completed the successful installation and commissioning of the first digital THYRIPART emergency diesel generator excitation system in the U.S. during the spring refueling outage at TXU Power's Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station Unit 1. THYRIPART is a load dependent static excitation system powered by the generator voltage and current. The system consists of a fully passive analog power circuit and the digital voltage regulation circuit, which controls electric current flow to the generator's field winding. While the two circuits are designed to work together, the analog circuit alone is capable of keeping the generator output within design basis limits. This unique design assures system operation in the event of a voltage regulator failure. The project also involved replacing 12 emergency diesel generator protection relays with a single multifunctional digital protection relay. The new relay is very robust and nearly maintenance free, while offering significant performance improvements over the previous relays. Emergency diesel generators serve as a backup source of power to the plant. Electrical system upgrades are increasing in the power industry because of equipment obsolescence and a lack of replacements parts. The desire for electrical system fault recording and performance evaluation capability is also factoring into upgrade decisions at many plants. THYRIPART and the protective relay offer this capability, and additionally they can be used for data recording purposes during the required periodic tests of emergency diesel generator operation. A new digital main-generator excitation system, THYRISIEM DD, was also installed by Framatome ANP during the outage. THYRIPART and THYRISIEM DD systems are designed and manufactured by Siemens. More than 150 Thyripart systems, mostly analog, have been installed at nuclear power plants worldwide. Both the emergency diesel generator and main generator excitation projects were performed under an Alliance Agreement between the two companies to oversee planning and installation of instrumentation and controls and electrical system upgrades for the two Comanche Peak nuclear units. The "Instrumentation & Control and Electrical Systems" Business Unit offers a complete range of electrical products, including class 1E and N-1E motors and circuit breakers. The product offerings are complemented by a comprehensive range of electrical engineering services, making Framatome ANP a leading provider of turnkey solutions to the U.S. nuclear power industry.
