At least 26 dead in China mudslide
Beijing (AFP) Sept 8, 2008 At least 26 people were killed Monday in a mud and rock slide triggered by heavy rains in northern China, which led to the collapse of a mine warehouse, officials and state media reported. Several others remained trapped in the debris of the warehouse in the city of Linfen in Shanxi province, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing local work safety board officials. The exact figure was not immediately known. An official at the work safety board contacted by AFP confirmed the deaths, but could not say how many people were missing. More than 300 policemen and villagers were searching through the rubble in the hopes of finding survivors, the report said. State television CCTV said 22 people had been rescued.
