Biden recognises Pacific nations Cook Islands, Niue in jab at China

Washington (AFP) Sept 25, 2023

President Joe Biden said the United States officially recognized the Pacific nations of Cook Islands and Niue Monday, as he hosted regional leaders in a bid to wrest influence from China.

Biden said in a statement that Washington recognized them as "sovereign and independent" states and would establish diplomatic relations with them, adding that the move would help advance a "free and open Indo-Pacific region."
