Organizers of a UN biodiversity summit to be held in Colombia this year said "all security guarantees are in place" for a successful conference despite threats from a local guerrilla group.

The EMC armed group, in a message on X addressed to President Gustavo Petro, warned Tuesday that the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity "will fail."

The warning came on the same day as the military vowed to clamp down on an EMC faction that recently walked out of peace talks with the government.

The EMC, or Central General Staff, is a group of dissidents that rejected the peace deal signed in 2016 by the FARC guerrilla movement, which subsequently disarmed.

The COP16 organizing committee said Wednesday it was working closely with local and national authorities and the United Nations security office "to ensure a safe and secure environment during the event."

It added in a statement that "all security guarantees are in place to have a successful and smooth conference."

A security plan endorsed by international bodies organizing the event "has already begun to be implemented" in the host city of Cali, it added.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and the validity of the messages circulating on social networks," said the statement.

The event is expected to attract some 12,000 delegates and exhibitors, as well as heads of state, to one of the world's most biodiverse countries.
