Estimated death toll in one Chinese city alone 20,000: report Beijing (AFP) May 17, 2008 Local Chinese officials estimate the death toll in one city alone, Deyang, will reach 20,000 after the massive earthquake, state-run Xinhua news agency reported Saturday. The sharp jump in the death toll in Deyang, a city of 3.8 million people, came just before the government raised its confirmed nationwide death toll to 28,881. The government had earlier confirmed 7,568 deaths in Deyang. But officials have estimated that the total death toll from the 7.9-magnitude quake is above 50,000 dead.
