Floods following days of heavy rain have killed at least 32 people in northeastern Brazil and left around 100,000 people left homeless, officials said Monday.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the government would make federal funds available to help the homeless.

The northeastern state of Alagoas was the hardest hit. Firefighters said 19 people had been killed there.

Lula met Monday with local governors to work on details of the relief efforts.
