Living With Climate Variability And Change
New York NY (SPX) Jun 15, 2006 Recognizing the urgent need to integrate climate data and forecasting into humanitarian and development strategies, the Living with Climate Variability and Change conference from July 17 to 21, 2006, in Espoo, Finland, will bring together stakeholders from around the world to discuss opportunities and constraints in integrating climate risks and uncertainties into decision-making at international, national and local levels. The conference is co-hosted by the UN World Meteorological Organization, the Finnish Meteorological Organization, and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, part of The Earth Institute at Columbia University. The conference brings together representatives from the private and public sectors, including multilateral organizations, government, industry, research institutes and development agencies, to share their knowledge and experiences in mitigating climate variability in terms of policy and implementation. A particular focus of the conference will be to highlight state-of-the-art research on complex decision-making theory and practice in sectors sensitive to climate variability and change. The first three days of the conference will feature experts from a broad range of fields who will discuss principles of risk assessment and management within broader institutional and policy frameworks in disease surveillance and prevention, agriculture, water resource management, power generation and disaster mitigation, among others. The remaining two days will allow participants to learn from one another in breakout sessions on climate-related issues including agriculture and food security, water resources, human health, and energy and the built environment. Conference organizers hope to make substantial progress in the establishment of an actionable agenda for climate-related risk management, to create an ongoing dialogue among stakeholders, and ultimately, to propose an enduring process for future work on this issue.
